1973

Geraldo Rivera on his Good Night America program takes us to California for a visit with Jane Fonda, then married to fellow activist Tom Hayden. This clip starts with a profile of her early acting career before we hear from Jane herself about why, at age 21, she decided on a life of activism.

Later in the interview footage from their trip to Indochina is shown, where Jane & Tom visited hospitals and infrastructure in Vietnam to find out what sort of issues people are facing. They find many still dying from the evil left behind — farmers stepping on unexploded ordinance from the war. We learn about “…people who are utterly dedicated….to rebuild their country, and to see foreigners out of their land.”

American troops largely withdrew from Vietnam in 1973, although fighting continued until the fall of Saigon in 1975.

Jane Fonda was very active against the Vietnam war, speaking at conferences and marching in protests the world over. Her visit to Hanoi and related photographs caused much public strife in America, though she has since apologized for any hurt that could have been caused. Jane’s anti-war activism continues today.
