2011
A brief history of the Iraq war. After 11 tours of reporting in the country, and then leaving with the troops, reflections on the sectarian strife that still rocks that region. As of 2011 a trillion dollars has been spent related to the Iraq war, evidenced by the fields and fields of equipment left behind: military vehicles and tanks, pick up trucks and SUVs, all because it would be too expensive to bring the gear home.
United States military entered Iraq in 2003, overthrowing dictator Saddam Hussein. The number of troops in Iraq peaked just over 170,000 during a surge in 2007, and the withdrawal was largely completed by 2011.
In 2014, American troops again entered the country, alongside others, to combat the Islamic State. In January 2019, Secretary of State MIke Pompeo put the number of troops in Iraq at about 5,000. American troops remain in Iraq 2024.
We hope for a safe return of all American personnel, dignity and peace for the Iraqi people.
