The Lazy 8 ranch in Montana, where a Japanese company recently bought the land and hired an American to run it. We meet Japanese ranchers, who traveled halfway across the world to be cowboys. One cow on this ranch can reach about 1600 pounds in maturity, 3/4 of a ton, much heavier than the cattle usually raised for American consumption. The ranch and its owners are interested in raising only the highest grade beef such as they enjoy back in Japan. Interestingly, America has more cattle than Japan has people, and in 1992 America accounts for 50% of the beef consumed in Japan..
In the early 2000s, American beef imports were a contentious issue in Japan and were banned at various times, thanks to BSE or ‘Mad Cow disease’. The trade resumes today with the trade in beef between the two countries in the billions.
