1974, New York City. We discover the big apple’s largest “welfare hotel” where over 700 are housed in 500 rooms, almost a third with public assistance funding. In the 50 years since this expose, which resulted in the building being shut down and conditions improved, what have we learned? Has the housing experience for low income residents in New York City gotten better, and what can we as a nation do to make sure no one lives in such deplorable conditions?
