Major Pete Hegseth, the president-elect’s nominee for Defense Secretary and a former Fox News colleague is being pilloried by former associates in various veterans groups he headed before his media career. The critics make widespread allegations ranging from financial mismanagement to unrestrained booze and sex parties.

Worse, in 2018 his own mother wrote a scathing condemnation of his allegedly abusive behavior toward women. It was obtained and published by the NYT, much to his mom’s regret.

In his defense, Major Pete has never been charged with a crime, and most of these allegations happened years ago, between his return from multiple, dangerous and stressful combat deployments and his subsequent Fox News career, which started in 2014.

His getting this huge Defense Secretary job was already waving red flags over his lack of experience. Whether these mounting allegations prove fatal to his nomination depends on whether there is an alcohol problem and what is still out there. Major Pete will also have to survive Senate confirmation hearings that will remind him of combat.

Even Republicans are wavering on his nomination now.
