In 1989 America suffered nearly 21,000 murders nationwide, with 16 murderers put to death for their crimes.
In 2023, 24 people were put to death as punishment for their crimes. The number of homicides saw a drop from 2022, at just under 19,000.
The electric chair remains an execution option in some states although the vast majority of inmates are executed with lethal injection.
